About the Artist

California - 1993

My name is Alexandria Hayes!

I am an independent artist specializing in the wildlife, pet portraits, and fantastical creatures. I am a full-time artist, but this genre specifically is my hobby. I work primarily in a combination of watercolor, graphite, and colored pencil, but occasionally dabble in other media.

I’ve been an animal lover my entire life. When I was very young, I wasn’t interested in much of anything if it wasn’t about an animal, and I was obsessed with dinosaurs. I remember shocking adults by pronouncing “Pachycephalosaurus” flawlessly, naming dinosaurs they’d never heard of, and saying I wanted to be a paleontologist when I grew up. My uncle had to ask my mom what that meant. I never drew anything but animals until middle school and it was still the overwhelming majority of my art until well into my teens.

I love all animals, not just the cute or furry ones. Steve Irwin was and is my hero. Thanks in no small part to him, I’m not afraid of any animal. I’ve always had a soft spot for the unpopular, “scary” ones - everything from “mean” dog breeds to snakes and bats and spiders. That only solidified as I got older and I became the unpopular, “scary” one. I’ve learned that just because some people can’t appreciate our beauty doesn’t mean it isn’t there.

Outside of art, I like superheroes, horror games, Pokemon, and history. I speak a fair bit of Spanish and am learning Italian. Currently mom to four snakes and eight tarantulas.
